Controversial Debate on Capital Punishment

controversial Debate on Capital Punishment

legal philosopher James Fitzjames Stephens thought vengeance was an acceptable justification for punishment. One year ago, Dylann Roof opened fire at a church in Charleston, South Carolina, killing nine people, all African-American. There are also state versions of these facilities, which the New York City Bar Association has labeled as cruel and unusual punishment, likening imprisonment in one as torture under international law. But just retribution, designed to re-establish justice, can easily be distinguished from vengeance and vindictiveness. In the same way many people feel that the death penalty is an inappropriate for a modern civilised society to respond to even the most dreadful crimes.

Capital Punishment as an Option

For reasons like this and the ones above, Amnesty International opposes the death penalty in all circumstances. So why shouldn't the punishment reserved for the most heinous crime be applied to him? They argue that, in the USA at least, only a small minority of murderers are actually executed, and that imposition of capital punishment on a "capriciously selected random handful" of offenders does not amount to a consistent programme of retribution. Many supporters of the death penalty also agree that execution is often the most appropriate punishment for those who commit heinous crimes. The morality of different execution methods such as lethal injection, electrocution, hanging and even firing squad are often debated. I've never been to prison, but having dealt regularly with prisoners, it's clear that prison life is hard - very hard. Death penalty litigation is harder on families of murder victims.
