Presently, the prospect of using artificial blood is difficult to envision. Scientists believe that one of the future evolutionary innovations could be artificial blood substitutes that might pave the way to a new era.
In order to work, however, they must be combined with other materials that enable them to mix in with the bloodstream. A more recent approach is to use nanotechnology to encapsulate hemoglobin and enzymes inside biodegradable polylactic acid membrane nanocapsules some.15 microns in diameter. It received renewed interest when the shortcomings of the blood bank system were discovered during the Vietnam conflict. In experiments done on frogs, scientists found that they could keep frogs alive for some time if they removed all their blood and replaced it with a saline solution. Also, various physical and chemical properties of the finished product are checked such as pH, melting point, moisture content, etc. Another potential substitute was salt or saline solutions.
