Hollands Othello spirals into suspicion, the veneer of civility gives way to something vicious and irrational. Young, rich, and foolish, Roderigo is convinced that if he gives Iago all of his money, Iago will help him win Desdemonas hand. He is an eloquent and powerful figure, respected by all those around him. Othello as a Military Man.
In telling the story of how he was passed over for prom otion to lieutenant, Iago says that three influential men approached Othello.
Instead of a master manipulator pulling on Othello s puppet str ings, he gives us a lowly, servile soldier outsmarting his superior officer.
Brabantio thinks of Othello as the Moorish soldiera well-behaved barbarian.
